Other organizations providing pan-European research support include:

European Cooperation in Science and Technology Program (COST)
Founded in 1971, COST is an intergovernmental framework for European cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research. COST funding covers the coordination costs associated with organising and attending meetings, workshops and conferences; short-term scientific missions as well as publications and other dissemination activities. Research activities themselves are supported through national funds and are not supported by COST.

COST benefits from a flexible structure, allowing for an easy implementation and light management of research initiatives (“Actions”). All Actions are defined through consultation with European researchers. Member countries participate “à la carte” in only those initiatives of interest to them. COST welcomes the participation of interested institutions from non-COST member states without any geographical restriction. In 2006, Canadian institutions participated in 26 COST projects (second only to Russia among non-COST member states).

European Science Foundation (ESF)
The European Science Foundation was established over 30 years ago by national research organizations in Europe as a platform for trans-national cooperation. It was an initiative in the spirit of the European Research Area (ERA) long before that concept was adopted by the European Commission. Today, it has 78 member organizations in 30 countries. It provides an independent voice for science and, at the same time, acts at the European level to create synergies between the resources for research within its member organizations. The ESF embraces all areas of the sciences, engineering sciences, social sciences and humanities.
