S&T Policy :: Canadian S&T Strategy
Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada’s Advantage

In 2007, the Government of Canada set out a comprehensive multi-year science and technology strategy for the country. “Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada’s Advantage” is based on three fundamental convictions:

  • Canada needs a strong private sector commitment to S&T
  • Canada must continue to strengthen its knowledge base by setting international standards of excellence
  • Canada must be a magnet for world-wide talent
To meet these objectives, the strategy is guided by four core principles:

  • Promote world-class excellence
  • Focus on priorities
  • Encourage partnerships
  • Enhance accountability
It applies these principles in three policy areas in order to build for Canada:

  • A knowledge advantage
  • A people advantage
  • An entrepreneurial advantage
The strategy also sets out priority research areas based on existing strengths and opportunities for international leadership as well as social and economic interest:

  • Environmental sciences and technologies
  • Natural resources and energy
  • Health and related life sciences and technologies
  • Information and communication technologies
