The National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP)
The National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP), is Canada’ premier innovation assistance program for small and medium-sized Canadian enterprises (SMEs). IRAP will support participation by SMEs in international research programs under specified terms and conditions.
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada is a national instrument for making strategic investments in Canada’s capacity in science and technological development. NSERC’s role is to make investments in people, discovery and innovation for the benefit of all Canadians. We invest in people by supporting more than 30,000 university students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies. We promote discovery by funding more than 12,000 university professors every year. And we help make innovation happen by encouraging more than 1500 Canadian companies to invest in university research. In 2010-2011, NSERC invested $1080 million in university-based research and training in all the natural sciences and engineering making it the largest federal department or agency in terms of expenditures on S&T in Canada.
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRS) is the federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities. SSHRC-funded research fuels innovative thinking about real life issues, including the economy, education, health care, the environment, immigration, globalization, language, ethics, peace, security, human rights, law, poverty, mass communication, politics, literature, addiction, pop culture, sexuality, religion, Aboriginal rights, the past, our future.
PRECARN
PRECARN is an independent not-for-profit company that supports the pre-commercial development of leading-edge technologies. PRECARN works with Canadian companies who are seeking to commercialize their new ideas to get an edge in global markets. Unlike other research funding programs, PRECARN uses a collaborative model that includes a developer, a customer and an academic research partner in every project. This collaboration accelerates development, reduces risk and shares the cost of the R&D. PRECARN provides access to an extensive national network of world-class researchers, innovative companies and sources of funding.
Going Global Science and Technology Fund
The Going Global Science and Technology (S&T) Program is specifically designed to promote and enhance Canada's international science and technology efforts by supporting Canadian researchers in accessing international R&D collaborative opportunities through the development of partnerships with key players in other countries/economies. The Going Global S&T Program supports activities ("projects") that aim to build on targeted relationships between Canadian researchers and key players in other countries and allow them to proceed with the formal discussions required to initiate collaboration on future international research and development initiatives. The Program funding is used for the face-to-face encounters needed to solidify the partnership and move it forward to the point where the researchers can begin the R&D phase of the initiative. These meetings may be used to formulate the partnership and conduct detailed planning of their collaborative R&D initiative (i.e. to define objectives, activities, timelines, responsibilities, etc.)
International Strategic Opportunities Program Guidelines (ISOP)
The International Strategic opportunities Program (ISOP) provides funding for strategic international collaborations between Ontario research institutions and the global research community. The goal of the program is to improve Ontario’s long-term economic potential by attracting and retaining the best and brightest research talent.
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
CIHR consists of 13 “virtual” institutes that work together to share a national health research agenda for Canada. The institutes bring together researchers, health professionals and policy-makers from voluntary health organizations, provincial government agencies, international research organizations and industry and patient groups from across the country with a shared interest in improving the health of Canadians.
Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)
By investing in research infrastructure projects, the CFI’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and other not-for-profit institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development.
