International Opportunities for Canadians

  1. CRC awards allow Chair holders to travel abroad, participate in international research projects, support student participation in these projects and contribute to the travel expenses of international colleagues.
  2. Vanier scholarships allow Canadian and international students to travel abroad.
  3. The CGS program supports 250 Canadian graduate students each year seeking to pursue their studies outside Canada. In addition, it allows Canadian students studying in Canada to travel abroad.
  4. Industrial R&D internships allow Canadian students to travel abroad.
The Government of Canada supports international research collaborations directly through the following organizations and programs:

DFAIT International S&T Program

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada’s International S&T program plays a strategic role in enhancing Canada’s S&T capacity, competitiveness and prosperity by promoting international linkages for Canadian research institutions, universities and firms. It aims to foster international research collaborations and commercialization, to incorporate leading research into national innovation processes and position Canada as a valuable international research partner.

The program provides:

  • An international network of S&T Counsellors in Canadian Embassies
  • Information for Canadians on:
o Contracts and IP Issues in Europe
    o Technology Transfer in Europe
o Major S&T Projects in Europe
  • Information for Europeans on:
    o Technology Transfer in Canada
o Major S&T Projects in Canada

DFAIT Going Global Innovation Program

Going Global Innovation (Going Global) is the innovation, science and technology pillar of the Global Commerce Support Program (GCSP). The GCSP provides a client focused consolidated approach for accessing funding sources from DFAIT in order to attract foreign direct investment, increase Canadian innovation and commercialization opportunities and to increase Canada's business share in foreign markets.
The objective of Going Global is to promote and enhance Canada's international innovation efforts by supporting Canadian companies and/or researchers in pursuing international R&D collaborative opportunities through the development of partnerships with key players in other countries/economies.

NRC Funding Guide for International Science and Technology Cooperation
The guide was first established by the National Research Council of Canada to help its researchers take advantage of other sources of funding and is available to all Canadian researchers. This site also permits foreign researchers to find out potential partnering opportunities with their Canadian counterparts.

International Development Research Centre
IDRC funds applied research by researchers in developing countries on the problems they identify as crucial to their communities. It supports research under four broad themes:

IDRC also funds and administers a Training and Awards Program for young researchers from Canada and developing countries. The Canadian Partnerships Program fosters alliances and knowledge-sharing among scientific, academic, and development communities in Canada and the South.

International Science and Technology Partnerships Canada
ISTP Canada works to strengthen Canada’s science and technology, business to business relations and, ultimately, the country’s overall economic, trade and political relations. It provides networking opportunities and funding to support Canadian participation in collaborative research projects with China and India. Emphasis is placed on research projects with the potential for commercial application.

Canadian Opportunities for Europeans

Through participation in Canadian research projects, Europeans have the opportunity to join well-funded teams involving researchers from Canada and around the world. There are opportunities for Europeans:

  • To build a professional research network in Canada
  • To work in Canada
  • To participate in well-funded and well-networked international research teams
Developing a professional research network in Canada

a.  Research Conferences. Traditionally researchers find potential partners
through their knowledge of the literature and participation in research
workshops and conferences. Many of the largest international events in
Canada are posted on the Web Sites of research projects, institutes and
universities funded by ERA-Can’s Canadian Stakeholders and through the
Stakeholders themselves. Please follow the links from our Stakeholders’ Web
     Sites (above).

b.  Partner Search. One cost effective way to find Canadians working in a
particular field is to browse the “awards search engines” linked to this Web
site. (please click here). It is possible to search by research topic, field of
     expertise, discipline and institutional affiliation.

c.  Expert Adjudicators. Another effective way to build a professional network in
Canada is to participate as an expert adjudicator in the peer review process.
Many Canadian research funding organizations are searching for experts to
adjudicate funding competitions. If accepted, you will have the opportunity to
review Canadian research proposals in your field, travel to Canada to meet
with your fellow reviewers and both build your knowledge of the adjudication
process and your network of potential research partners in Canada. To apply,
please follow the links on the Web Site of the appropriate ERA-Can
    Stakeholder organization (above)

d. Training, Mobility and Career Development Opportunities. Canadian research
funding organizations offer a number of exceptional training, mobility and
career development opportunities for Europeans in Canada. These include:

    Canada Graduate Scholarships
The CGS program offers up to 500 scholarships for international students to
study in Canada. The program is administered jointly by Canada’s three
research granting agencies (please visit their Web Sites, above).

    Canada Research Chairs
The CRC program funds research professorships in Canadian universities that
are open to international researchers. Tier 1 chairs support outstanding
researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. Tier 2
Chairs are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers
as having the potential to lead in their field. Both types of Chairs receive
infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The
program is administered jointly by Canada’s three research funding agencies
    and CFI.

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada
AUCC provides information on Canadian scholarships available for
international students wishing to study in Canada.

e. Employment Opportunities. Europeans will find opportunities for employment
in Canadian institutions in the University Affairs Magazine and the Web Site
of  the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (www.aucc.ca) as
well as the Web Site of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges
    (www.accc.ca).

Europeans working in Canada

European researchers working at Canadian universities are fully eligible to participate in Canadian research funding programs.

Participate in Canadian Research Projects

European researchers and research organizations are invited to participate in Canadian research projects on a self-financing basis. As equal partners, Europeans can join large, well-funded multi-disciplinary international teams, addressing critical issues of global concern.

Please note: Europeans may join Canadian research teams as full partners at the proposal stage or join after Canadian funding has been awarded.
