2012 Calls for Proposals - With Targeted Opportunities for Canadians

Canadians are eligible to participate in European FP7 projects. In fact, some calls-for-proposals specifically welcome applications from research teams that include Canadians. These “targeted opportunities” for Canadians are identified in the list below in calls-for-proposals currently open in:

• Energy
• Environment (including Climate Change)
• Health
• Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy
• Transport (including Aeronautics)

Calls for proposals in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), the European Commission’s principal funding mechanism for advanced research, focus on specific issues to advance research on major societal and global challenges. They encourage leading researchers from across Europe, in all sectors, to work together with researchers from around the world.

There are now almost 200 Canadians, from 25 universities as well as government and private sector organizations, in FP7 projects. It is a great way to leverage resources, strengthen networks, work internationally and bring Europeans to Canada: broadening the capacity and impact of our research. Canadian participation is generally pursued on a self-funded basis although opportunities for support are available where a Canadian contribution is deemed essential to a project’s success.

Title: Impact of the quality of CO₂ on transport and storage
Funding level: €5.2 million
Objective: To conduct a techno-economic assessment of the impact of impurities in CO2, from power plants and other CO2 intensive industries, on fluid properties, phase behaviour and chemical reactions in the transport pipelines and the storage infrastructure and storage site integrity.

Title: Development of advanced techno-economic modeling tools for assessing costs and impacts of mitigation policies
Funding level: €6 million
Objective: To develop and validate new models, new model components or the improvement/upgrading of existing models for measuring the environmental and socio-economic opportunities and impacts of climate change.

Title: Strategies, costs and impacts of adaptation to climate change
Funding level: €6 million
Objective: To build a strong and comprehensive knowledge base that is required to identify appropriate options and develop medium and long-term strategies for adaptation to climate change at national, regional and local scales. Of particular relevance will be the bottom-up assessment of the full economic costs and benefits of climate change adaptation at sector level with particular attention to sectors of high economic and social importance, as well as the aggregation of such bottom-up approaches to enable the estimation of economy wide costs and benefits at EU and national level.

Title: Exploration of the operational potential of the concepts of ecosystem services and natural capital to systematically inform sustainable land, water and urban management
Funding level: €9 million
Objective: Integrated natural, social and economic research is needed to assess the ecosystem services relevant to human well-being and analyze links between and comparisons across locales, sectors, scales and time (for example, across a coherent set of case studies) in a range of social-ecological systems that must at least include fresh water bodies, coastal zones, urban and rural areas and their interfaces. Focusing on the socio-economic implications of choices on the use of ecosystem services, research will address the trade-offs and synergies between ecosystem services and between components of social and individual well-being that arise from the demands on these systems.

Title: Integrating environmental and health data to advance knowledge of the role of environment in human health and well-being.
Funding level: €9 Million
Objective: To exploit available or to-be-developed novel tools and methods (e.g. remote sensing/GIS-based/spatial analysis, 'omics'-based approaches, biomarkers of exposure, exposure devices and experimental models, new tools for combined exposures, novel study designs, burden of disease methodologies) to integrate and link environmental data with health data and information, and to apply them to (large-scale) population studies including new ones if deemed necessary (a concept that was recently proposed in the literature as 'exposome').

Title: Diagnostics for infectious diseases
Funding level: €6 million
Objective: To confront major threats to public health with emphasis on HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, hepatitis, neglected infectious diseases, emerging epidemics and antimicrobial drug resistance, including fungal pathogens.

Title: Development and evaluation of scientific methodologies for cost effective risk-based animal health surveillance
Funding level: €3 million
Objective: To develop and evaluate scientific methodologies that will assist relevant authorities in designing evidence-based and cost-effective risk-based surveillance programs for early detection of zoonotic pathogens and accurate risk estimation to underpin the development of response policies.

Title: Study on the need for food and health research infrastructures
Funding level: €2 million
Objective: To identify existing infrastructures for food and health research, and to assess the need to integrate these and/or to create new infrastructures. Activities under the umbrella of such infrastructures should include experimentation, observation and monitoring, data processing and modeling, conservation and distribution, and finally, knowledge transfer.

Title: Impact of lifestyle on well-being and diet-related disease
Funding level: €9 million
Objective: To improve understanding of the effects of lifestyle factors on human health and their relative importance, so as to contribute to developing new ways for the prevention of diet-related diseases, and for maintaining and promoting optimal health and well-being across lifespan and ultimately towards healthy ageing.

Title: Strengthening cooperation for global food safety research
Funding level: €1 million
Objective: To further develop the understanding of food safety and quality aspects related to parasites of public health importance in seafood. Further understanding of the public health impacts of these biological hazards should be developed, together with tools for risk analysis and methods of monitoring, detection and mitigation.

Title: Integrated approach to safe flights under icing conditions
Funding level: €5 million
Objective: To develop measurement techniques and instrumentation for research purposes and for use on-board of commercial aircraft (detection and crew alert). Measurements of the physical characteristics of glaciated and mixed phase icing conditions will be performed in high altitude clouds. This knowledge will be used to improve the representativeness of ground testing (wind tunnels) and modeling capacities.
