Canadian Scientists Win Prizes

Canadian Scientists Win Prizes
at the 11th Annual Ulm Electrochemical Talks, Germany

June 13, 2008 – Two Canadian scientists, Toby Astill and Ata Roudgar, doctoral candidates in chemistry at Simon Fraser University, won prizes at the 11th Annual Ulm Electrochemical Talks in Ulm, Germany. Roudgar took first prize for his poster presentation on the “Characterization of PEMFC membrane electrode assemblies incorporating sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) ionomer in the catalyst layer” while Astill was awarded third prize, in the same category, for his work on “Ab initio Calculations of Interfacial Structure and Dynamics in Fuel Cell Membranes” (with Sudha P. Narasimachary and Michael Eikerling).

Both Astill and Roudgar were members of the Canadian delegation at the Canada-EU Young Scientist Workshop on Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology, held on June 10, and the Ulm Electrochemical Talks, on June 11-12, supported by the European Research Area-Canada Initiative (ERA-Can) in cooperation with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and the Federal Ministry of Science and Education in Germany.

The initiative, led by Dr. Michael Eikerling of the NRC Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation and Simon Fraser University and Dr. Werner Tillmetz of the Fuel Cell Education and Training Centre in Ulm, Germany, brought together outstanding young Canadian and European scientists working on the performance, safety and quality of hydrogen fuel cell technology. It gave them the opportunity to engage with international leaders in the field and establish lasting research collaborations in an area of strategic importance for Canada and Europe.

It helps Canadian and European researchers and research organizations find potential partners and funding opportunities through the organization of information sessions, strategic international workshops and the Canada-Europe S&T Network.

ERA-Can is a joint initiative of the Directorate-General for Research of the European Commission and eight Canadian organizations: the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Federal Partners in Technology Transfer, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Genome Canada, National Research Council Canada, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

Opportunities for Canadians in European Mobility Programs

ERA-Can hosted a Web Seminar on “Opportunities for Canadians in European Mobility Programs” on Thursday, April 3, 2008. The event, which drew participants from every province and many European countries, featured a presentation by Dr. Barbara Rhode, Senior Advisor, and Ms. Alessandra Lucchetti, Deputy Head of Unit, Individual Fellowships, Directorate-General for Research, European Commission.

Their presentation, available here, addressed the following programs:

  • Marie Curie International Fellowships that support both European placements for researchers from Canada and Canadian placements for researchers from Europe.
  • Marie Curie Initial Training Networks that support Canadian PhD students at European universities and facilitate doctoral training networks that can include Canadian universities
  • Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme that supports researcher and research staff exchanges.

  • European Mobility Portal that helps locate doctoral and career opportunities in Europe.
  • ERA-More helps Canadian researchers on arrival in Europe.
  • Peer Review Panels invite Canadians to Europe to assist in peer review and network with scholars in their field.
A Summary of questions and answers from the Web Seminar is available here.

International Research Staff Exchange Scheme

The European Commission has launched a call for proposals for a new scheme which will create closer links between staff working in research organisations in Europe and their counterparts in other international partner countries. The scheme will support staff exchanges of up to 12 months per staff member. Staff from research organisations in 29 different countries can participate and the scheme is open to all fields of research. The International Research Staff Exchange Scheme, as it is known, will have a budget of €25 million for 2008. The announcement of this scheme comes as the European Commission launches calls for proposals for over €1 billion of research funds to be allocated in 2008.

More details about the call are available via the network of National Contact Points (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ncp_en.html), from the European Commission delegation, or on the CORDIS website (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/dc/index.cfm)
